MCC 239/7 declared, St John's 240/6, St John's wins by 4 wickets
Three impressive individual contributions gave St John's a famous victory over the MCC on Tuesday 6 May. Star of the show was the irrepressible Adrian Van Der Ploeg, who scored an astonishing 113 runs from just 74 balls. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he was awarded the L. S. Moody man-of-the-match trophy by the opposition.
Josh Stainer also batted exceptionally well, scoring 63 runs and putting on a partnership of 154 in only 20 overs with Van Der Ploeg. Both batsmen rotated the strike and played with real tempo, helped by some thundering boundaries from the centurion.
Earlier in the day, Jamie Moore bowled outstandingly well against some high-quality batsmen. He finished with 4 wickets for 55 runs, including some notable scalps – perhaps the most notable was Old Johnian Simon Barrett, who gained top score for the MCC with 92.
Our gratitude goes to the MCC for a generous declaration and for a game played in excellent spirit. The fixture confirmed the value of matches such as these, giving schoolboys the opportunity to play with accomplished adult cricketers and expand their own personal horizons, and we look forward to next year's game.
