On Monday 10 March, Upper Fifth pupils studying GCSE Graphic Communication visited a thriving technology company in London to find out how mobile digital services and products are conceived and developed. Monitise Create (formerlyGrapple) design apps and mobile websites for smartphones. This flourishing graphic design firm has helped some of the world’s largest businesses with mobile banking, mobile shopping solutions and a range of other mobile services.
Creative Director Trish Patel gave the pupils an overview of their activities and achievements, followed by a tour of the offices in order that pupils could gain an understanding of the different stages involved in the development of an app. Many of their staff are currently working hard towards the launch of the 2014 FIFA World Cup App.
Pupils were then tasked with brainstorming and visualising their own ideas for an app, using the theme “Order/Disorder” as a starting point. Working in small teams, they were shown a number of different techniques which can be used to generate ideas quickly for any design brief. At the end of the activity, each team created mock-ups of their app, presented their ideas and fielded questions from the group. The pupils’ ideas were very well received by the professionals and they found that they were able to take away a number of strategies which will immediately help them with their current graphic communication project. The pupils were very grateful to Trish and her colleagues for taking them behind the scenes of this exciting business and for giving up so much of their time.
