A girl in the youngest year at St John’s has just been crowned overall U14 national alpine skiing champion. Over half term, Abigail Bruce (Fourth Form, Haslewood House) took part in the English Alpine Ski Championships held in Bormio (Italy) and swept virtually all before her in her age section.
Over the course of an exhausting six days, Abigail took part in three separate and highly pressurised competitions. In the super-G competition, considered to be the main speed event, she won both races with almost 2 seconds in hand each time.
Then, in the giant slalom, a race combining speed with technical turns, she finished first by over 3 seconds in the combined two-run timings. Speed is clearly Abigail’s strength. Yet her skiing also has considerable precision, for in the more technical slalom competition she still managed to finish in third-place. Two first-place titles and one third-place podium were enough to secure the overall U14 championship title.
While Abigail was competing in the U14 section, her older sister Sasha (Lower Fifth, Haslewood House) was competing at U16 level. On the strength of their performances in their respective age groups, both sisters have met the criteria for the U16 England Squad selection next season (2014/15). Trials will be taking place in May.
