The School has congratulated a number of pupils for their sporting success at the English Schools’ Athletics Association National Championships which took place during the summer holidays.
The event is the fourth largest of its kind in the world, and brings together the best junior athletes in each county to compete for the honour of being crowned the best athlete in the country at their discipline.
Surrey is an incredibly strong county for athletics, but is only permitted to select 60 athletes across three age groups, so to make the team is an accomplishment in itself. St John’s was proud to have three representatives at the Championships.
Ellie Grove (currently Lower Fifth, Gloucester) scored two medals at the event. She finished 2nd in the Junior Girls’ 200m and was part of the winning 4x100m team. Ellie raised her game in every round, smashing her personal best along the way.
School leavers Suzie Monk (Upper Sixth, South) and Dylan Carlsson-Smith (Upper Fifth, West) also represented the county. Suzie came 6th in the Senior Girls’ 1500m steeplechase, and Dylan finished 4th in the Inter Boys’ pole vault.
The three St John’s representatives contributed to the overall national title for Surrey – a fantastic achievement. Athletics is a great part of summer sport at St John’s, and we look to the future success of our athletes with keen anticipation.
