We were thrilled to welcome as our Lent Visitor last week Father John Gribben, a monk at the Community of the Resurrection, Mirfield. Fr Gribben has been a member of the community for 36 years, serving as prior and tutor at the theological college attached to the monastery. The community is one of the best-known in the Church of England and has also had houses in South Africa, where the community lead the fight against Apartheid.
He spent two days in school, leading worship and talking with pupils about life as a member of a religious community. He preached at a Eucharist for the beginning of Lent, reminding staff and pupils of the obligation on human beings of service and devotion to others. It was a moving start to the season. Visiting the Departments of English, History and Religious Education, Fr Gribben answered questions from “Why did you become a monk?” to “Does God exist?” His natural humility and good humour had an impact on all who met him and all who participated in conversation. We hope to further our good links with this excellent community in Yorkshire.
