The School’s U16 rugby sevens team headed to Royal Grammar School in Guildford on Sunday 1 March, to take part in one of the most challenging U16 tournaments in the calendar. For their first outing this season the squad showed real promise, with an abundance of potential, talent and determination. With only two teams from a pool of five progressing in the tournament, there was no room for error.
A few cobwebs were blown off against Wimbledon College with a 24-5 win, before Wellington (the eventual winner of the tournament) was given a real fright, despite emerging from the game victorious. This proved to be the pool decider as St John’s moved up the gears, dispatching Bryanston (47-0) and QE Barnet (50-0) to finish second in the pool and progress to the plate competition semi-finals.
Abingdon lay in wait in the next stage, but the St John’s team was too good in both the semi (35-17), and in the final against a very strong Judd side. The School took home the tournament plate after a 43-0 win, along with numerous admirers of the way they played the game.
Kimball Klintworth (Upper Fifth, East House), was a fine leader and his other Upper Fifth team mates showed dedication, good conditioning, and wonderfully stylish sevens skills. The offloading and support play was exceptional along with the defence in the knock-out stages. A very special mention must go also to the U15 boys who stepped up an age group and proved to be some of the best players at the tournament.
Head of Rugby at St John’s Christopher Roberts said, ”St John's definitely turned some heads and the team was heavily praised for its performance by many a coach and spectator during the day. No doubt at future tournaments other squads will be looking over their shoulder at the St John’s U16 squad.”
