The St John’s ski team recently enjoyed considerable success in the shadow of Mont Blanc at Chamonix. Abigail and Sasha Bruce (Lower Fifth and Upper Fifth, Haslewood House), Jamie Shaw (Upper Fifth, East House), Guy Broad (Upper Fifth, Churchill House), Oliver Attard (Upper Fifth, East House), Isabella Eperon (Lower Fifth, South House) and Sam Attard (Fourth Form, East House) all competed strongly in the Equity Interschool Ski Challenge at Les Houches.
This was a major event involving over 120 British schools, running over two days in early March, involving slalom and giant slalom races in different age categories. The standard was exceptionally high, with many competitors benefitting from the advantage of ready access to snow and training. Nonetheless our team performed strongly, with top honours going to Sasha Bruce, who picked up medals for coming 3rd in the slalom and 4th in the giant slalom events. Overall, St John’s was placed 20th, a superb result in such a tough event.
The team’s success, backed by the strong support and commitment of parents, bodes well for the development of competition skiing at St John’s. The team included two boys, Guy and Jamie, who were new to racing and yet who demonstrated through their attitude and improvement just how much potential they have to become competent and competitive racers.
Special thanks go to Claire Attard and Heather Bruce for the huge amount of work they put into organising the event, for their technical support and for the encouragement offered to our skiers. The team could not have done it without them!
