Sleeping bags? Check. Onesies? Check. Tents? Absolutely not! The 2015 Sleep Out on the Quad on Thursday 19 March saw pupils, teachers and staff take to the School Quad to camp out under the stars, all in the name of charity.
The chilly (and windy!) evening saw some 50 take part in the sleep out, having been sponsored to sleep outside without the comfort and warmth of a tent.
Chatting over a bedtime hot chocolate, pupils discussed the notion of sleeping rough, and pondered how it would feel sleeping outside every night, rather than a single evening in aid of charity. Vicky MacFarlane (Upper Fifth, South House), said, “I am so glad that I raised money for the children to have fun this summer. It wasn’t the end of the world to sleep out and have just one hard night. It made me realise just how hard it must be for those who have to sleep out every night.”
Sophie Brewer (Lower Sixth, South House) added, “I am so glad to have helped. I really want to take part in the summer community holiday this year to help make a difference to the children with special needs. My friends did it last year and thought it was life changing! I can’t wait!”
The sleep out raised vital funds for the upcoming St John’s School Community Holiday, a week-long residential break in the summer holidays for children aged 10 to 16 with a range of special needs. St John’s pupils volunteer 24 hours a day during the week, offering each child one-to-one support and care. The holiday also allows parents and carers a week of much-needed respite.
The 2015 St John’s School Community Holiday will take place from Saturday 15 to Saturday 22 August, with pupils working hard throughout the course of the 2014-15 academic year to fundraise in its honour. Thursday’s sleep out on the Quad raised approximately £6,000 towards the running of the holiday – a fantastic achievement of all those involved.
