On Friday 20 March, a pupil from St John’s represented England in the British Schools Small-bore Rifle Association (BSSRA) National match, in which England thrashed Scotland, having lost out to them the previous year.
Callum Van Beveren (Lower Sixth, East House) placed equal 3rd in his squad, and was ranked eighth overall. Although a long line of National honours shooters who trained at St John’s were capped later in their careers, Callum is the first ever pupil from St John’s to represent England in this event whilst still at the School.
BSSRA aims to encourage and promote the sport of target rifle shooting amongst pupils at school, national and international level, and it is a great accomplishment for Callum to be selected.
Shooting coach Jon Tapster commented, “This achievement further consolidates the School’s position amongst the top quartile of UK shooting schools. Callum’s success cannot be underestimated - his calm focus under pressure is admirable.”
