The School’s swimming squad achieved an amazing feat over the weekend, completing a distance of 124 miles (199.5 km) in the 2015 sponsored swim. The 23-man squad racked up an impressive 8,713.2 lengths of the St John’s pool on Saturday 9 May. As the crow flies, this is the equivalent distance to the shores of Dunkirk and beyond!
Last year’s record of 7,557.4 lengths was broken by some distance. Bruce McCormick (Lower Fifth, Montgomery House) and Vyncent Lowery (Lower Fifth, East House) also smashed the record for individual swimmers, both completing a staggering 640 lengths (9.09 miles/14.62 km). Captain Lotte Senior (Upper Sixth, Haslewood House) also put in an admirable performance, notching up 450 lengths (6.39 miles/10.28 km) despite injury.
This is the latest in a number of the squad’s recent successes, with the boys’ junior and intermediate teams being particularly successful. Against Charterhouse School, the intermediates came first and second in every race they swam. The teams also performed very well in their fixture against Christ’s Hospital School and Hurstpierpoint College, with a fine team effort by the U16 girls.
The proceeds raised by Saturday’s swim will be going to the Nepalese earthquake appeal. The School wishes to congratulate everyone who took part and thank those who sponsored the swimmers.
