Visit by Sir David Bell

St John’s was very fortunate to have Sir David Bell, Vice-Chancellor of Reading University, come to the School to speak to the Lower Sixth as they begin their university research. He gave a wonderfully informative talk on his own background from primary school teacher through to his present role and explained how one can never be sure of what opportunities will present themselves during a career.

His talk covered a range of subjects from ‘why university education is still of benefit’ through to ‘embracing the whole university experience’. It contained valuable advice on the application process and on the need to stand out from the crowd. The talk also elicited some excellent questions from the audience on overseas studies, gap years and the need for as much work experience as possible.
