A St John’s pupil has had the honour of competing at the highest level to represent her country. Ellie Grove (Lower Fifth, Gloucester House) travelled to the SIAB Home International Athletics meeting in Glasgow earlier this month as part of the U17 team that represented England against Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Ellie won a bronze medal in the individual 300m race and a gold running in England's winning 4x300m relay team.
The selection process was not an easy one. At the start of the month she and another St John’s girl, Alexa Eichelmann (Lower Fifth, South House), were chosen to represent Surrey at the English Schools Track & Field Championships. This competition took place in Gateshead, where Ellie came second in the 300m and was in the winning Surrey 4 x 100m relay team. The team’s overall time was a mere 0.2 seconds short of a championship record.
Mr James Kidd, the School’s Head of Athletics, said, “We are overjoyed by the success of both girls and are sure that they will go on to accomplish other feats in due course. There are many other promising young athletes at the School, too, who will no doubt follow their lead.”
