We are excited to announce that St John’s has been shortlisted in the 2015 TES Independent School Awards, for ‘Community Initiative of the Year’.
The School was nominated after the success of the first St John’s School Community Holiday, where pupil and teacher volunteers welcomed 20 young children with a range of special needs for a residential week of fun and adventure.
Held during the summer holidays, St John’s pupils worked tirelessly throughout the week to provide each child with one-to-one care and attention, with games, stories and activities. The children were treated to days out at the seaside, activity centres and theme parks during the week, as well as a trip to see West End show Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. At St John’s, the full in-house programme featured daily singing, sports, crafts and also theatre and drama sessions. The children learned a number of exciting things throughout the course of the week, from sailing and kayaking to circus skills.
Now in its third year, the St John’s School Community Holiday allows parents and carers a week of much-needed respite, safe in the knowledge that their children were being fully cared for and supported, and having a fantastic time.
Head of History and Community Holiday Lead Neil Whitmore said: “To be shortlisted for this award is testament to the dedication of all those involved in planning, organising and participating in the holiday. It is a humbling experience to work with the children and witness how caring the helpers are.”
Award winners will be revealed at an awards ceremony on the evening of Friday 27 November 2015.
