The leaves may be starting to turn, but summer sport is far from over at St John’s, with achievements across the board in athletics, swimming, rowing and cricket.
Ellie Grove (Upper Fifth, Gloucester) has capitalised on her silver 200m medal at the English Schools’ Championships in 2014, replicating that this year over 300m, before hitting the top of the national rankings over the summer. She has gone on to represent England at the SIAB International, placing third and being part of the winning relay team. To cap off a phenomenal season, Ellie headed to Manchester this past weekend, to take part in the UK School Games, where she represented the South-East team against opposition from across the whole of the UK.
The race was a tight affair, with victory decided by just seven hundredths of a second. However, as befitting her top billing, Ellie came off the winner, and was crowned UK Schools’ Champion, before again picking up a second medal as part of the relay squad. Ellie’s success, along with that of nationally-ranked Alexa Eichelmann (Upper Fifth, South) in pole vault and heptathlon, continues to showcase St John’s as one of the strongest athletics schools in the area.
In the pool, Ben Simpson (Lower Fifth, West) and Tom Shepherd (Lower Fifth, Surrey) were making waves in the English nationals. Ben qualified in the 50m breaststroke, and finished a fantastic 2nd place in the final. Tom also did well, and secured a solid 9th place final of the 50m freestyle.
Ardan Suphi (Lower Fifth, East) excelled on the rowing front, taking part in the National Junior Championships in Strathclyde during the break. A comfortable win in the J14 double skulls saw him complete the 2000m course in an excellent time of 7m35sec.
The School has also been selected for inclusion in The Cricketer’s Top 100 Schools listing, which celebrates the country’s best schools for cricket.
The Autumn Term is shaping up to be as eventful as ever, with the 1st IX football team beginning their 2015 ISFA Cup campaign on Monday 14 September against Bournemouth Collegiate School, U19 and U14 Netball teams prepare for first rounds of national cup, whilst the hockey teams prepare for their first season of indoor hockey.
