On Thursday 17 September, Churchill House held a ‘Gentleman’s Supper’ in the School’s Dining Hall to celebrate the start of the new academic year. The boys were treated to a fantastic three course meal by the catering staff and took the opportunity to interact with their peers from different year groups, as well as welcoming the new Fourth Form boys.
Deputy Headmaster Alex Tate featured as guest speaker during the evening. Mr Tate, who trekked to the Magnetic North Pole in 2006, regaled the Churchill boys with tales of frostbite and polar bears.
Churchill Housemaster Richard Jones commented: ‘The supper was a fantastic way to not only celebrate the successes of last year, but also launch the new academic year and welcome new pupils into the House. The boys looked very smart indeed in their black tie attire, and events such as these are good preparation for the future.’
Throughout the year, the School’s houses work tirelessly to fundraise for their chosen charities, take part in good-natured competitions and do battle in an effort to win the House Shield. The nine houses at St John’s are underpinned by camaraderie, community and pride, and it is in house that pupils can discover their own identity and a sense of belonging.
