Five of the School’s Lower Fifth swimmers pooled their talent over the weekend to compete in the South East Regional Championships.
Captain Ben Simpson (West), Tom Stansfield (Monty), Tom Shepherd (Surrey), Edward Reed (Surrey) and Charlie Bennett (East) competed in both the medley and freestyle relay events at the Guildford Spectrum.
The boys got off to a flying start in the freestyle, winning their first heat comfortably. In the second heat, St John’s finished one second faster than Reed's and Charterhouse. Ben, Charlie, Tom and Tom were crowned South East of England Champions of the freestyle relay.
Ben, Edward and the two Toms made up the School’s medley team, and fought off strong opposition in the form of Sevenoaks, Reed’s and Caterham to win the event.
Kerry Walsh, Assistant Director of Sport commented: ‘It’s a great achievement to win these events in such a strong swimming region! The boys were simply outstanding.”
The boys are now training hard for the National Finals, which will be held at the London Aquatic Centre (2012 Olympic Pool) in November. We wish them the very best of luck.
