The School’s U16 hockey players have excelled themselves this week, being crowned London champions in the National Schools Competition on Tuesday evening.
With the team consisting of the current U15 side plus four Upper Fifth pupils, the pressure was certainly on to impress. The girls performed extremely well, beating City of London Freemen’s 6-1 in the tournament’s semi-final, with Maya Yien (Lower Fifth, Gloucester), Olivia Conboy (Lower Fifth, Gloucester) and Emily Roe (Lower Fifth, South) all contributing two goals to the scoresheet.
In the final, Ali Roe (Lower Fifth, South) was the first Johnian to score, from a short corner after five minutes of play. Olivia Conboy followed suit after 21 minutes, and with two minutes to go, Pippa Hansford (Lower Fifth, Gloucester) scored the winning goal for St John’s. Lucie Bishop (Lower Fifth, South) and Maya Yien were named St John’s top performers of the tournament, both working hard to make an impact in the higher age bracket.
The girls now face the regional finals after half term, where they will compete for the South of England title.
