The School’s rugby sevens season got off to a great start on Sunday 28 February, with the U16 squad emerging victorious at the RGS Guildford Sevens tournament.
After winning the plate in 2015, the squad aimed high and hoped to go one better. A 41-12 win over Judd and a 26-12 victory against Eton set St John’s up for a great day indeed. Hampton met the same fate (29-12), and a 42-12 defeat of Worth confirmed the School as worthy group winners.
Following the group stages, St John’s ploughed through Wellington College, the 27-14 score line perhaps flattering Wellington.
In the final, St John’s raced to a 17-0 lead against Brighton College, who fought their way back to a 22-22 draw, taking the game to extra time, where St John’s scored once more to be crowned champions.
Team coach Richard Jones commented: ‘Brighton have been touted as a side to watch at the Rosslyn Park sevens later this term, so to have a win under our belts at this stage is fantastic. What unfolded over the course of the day will live long in the memory for all involved.’
