The School’s rugby players have completed an exceptional pre-season campaign in the last week of the summer holidays, with festivals at Eltham College and Reigate Grammar.
After three challenging days of pre-season training, the U15 team were placed in the ‘pool of death’ at Eltham College, with much learned in their games against Tonbridge, Dulwich and Reed’s.
The U16s excelled at Reigate, with magnificent performances against Trinity, Reed’s and Whitgift, and the 2nd XV did well to battle against two 1st XV sides. Their tie against the John Fisher 2nd XV was an even contest, and after a disappointing match against the Hurstpierpoint 1st XV, they bounced back to record a pleasing performance against the 1st XV of King’s Canterbury.
The St John’s 1st XV, fresh from a tour of South Africa, then took part in the President’s Cup. One of the most prestigious pre-season festivals in the country, St John’s were in excellent company. The team played magnificently to beat St Benedict’s 20-5 in their opening pool game, with a brutal contest against John Fisher decided by a drop goal (3-0). A clinical performance against Trinity saw St John’s top their group to face Whitgift in the final, where a closely-fought game saw them defeated 5-0.
Head of Rugby at St John’s, Chris Roberts, commented: “Our lads were once again superb on and off the field. It was so lovely to see so many parents, as well as current and former pupils in support. The week of pre-season at all age groups has been an enormous success and the buzz about rugby at St John’s is an infectious one indeed – we look forward to kicking off the 2016 season.”
