The School’s swimmers showcased impeccable aquatic ability at the weekend, representing St John’s in the Surrey Secondary Schools Team Championships at the Guildford Spectrum.
Intermediate girls Anna Stansfield (Fourth Form, Haslewood), Lilly Nowers (Lower Fifth, Haslewood), Lara Quickfall (Fourth Form, Gloucester) and Aurelia Loth (Fourth Form, South) finished eighth in the freestyle relay and seventh in the medley relay out of 22 teams - an impressive result. The intermediate boys’ team, made up of Fourth Formers Josh Hack (Churchill), Luke Horner-Long (Churchill), Matthew O'Neil (East), and Fergus Ames (West) also did well, finishing a respectable 11th place in the freestyle relay.
The senior boys enjoyed an outstanding evening. Both A and B teams swam superbly with many of the boys recording personal bests in their splits. The B team, featuring Charlie Bennett (Upper Fifth, East), Joe Duncan (Upper Fifth, Churchill), Jack Wallis (Lower Sixth, West) and Ed Reed (Upper Fifth, Surrey), swam some fast splits against A teams from other schools, putting them in the top five of all teams. The A team - Vyncent Lowry (Lower Sixth East), Ben Simpson (Upper Fifth, West), Tom Stansfield (Upper Fifth, Monty) and Tom Shepherd (Upper Fifth, Surrey) - won the freestyle relay, pipping Reed’s and Glyn in a very exciting close finish. With the substitution of Matthew Thomas (Lower Sixth, Monty) for Tom Stansfield in the medley relay the boys won yet again, to become Surrey champions at the event.
The team will now start training for the National Finals to be held at the London Aquatic Centre in November.
