On Tuesday 4 October the School hosted its first Engineering and Design Careers Insight event, featuring esteemed speakers from the engineering world.
Run by Head of Design and Technology at St John’s, Jason Ward, the event was aimed at pupils in the Sixth Form and Upper Fifth, and saw a number of teachers and pupils from local schools attend alongside current St John’s pupils and their parents.
Max Hicks, who attended with pupils from the City of London Freemen’s School, commented: “The engineering and design evening was quite excellent, and all the speakers were inspiring. It was a brilliant showcase for the value of design and technology as a GCSE and A level choice.”
Speakers at the event included Laurence Clift, Senior Lecturer and Programme Director of Ergonomics at Loughborough University, and the Director of MW Aerospace Ltd Matthew Weeks. A number of Old Johnians also spoke, including as 2014 James Dyson Award Winner James Roberts (West, 2010) and Dyson Design Engineer Charlie Gale (West, 2009).
A parent commented: “My son was inspired by last night’s event and it has opened his eyes to the range of careers which are available. It has provided him with a wonderful opportunity to network with engineers and businesses in the world outside school.”
Alexander Mogford, the School’s Head of Sixth Form, added: “The pupils were absolutely buzzing after attending the design and technology event. It must have been mentioned in every class I taught the following day.”
