Lower School take on the Hub Challenge

Before the half term break, Lower School (Year 7) pupils took part in the exciting ‘Hub Challenge’, as part of the St John’s Autumn Term Enrichment Day.

The challenge consisted of a series of small group challenges aimed to develop communication, leadership and teamwork skills. Pupils were split into five groups, with each team required to select a representative to choose one of the challenges off the Hub board and explain the task to the rest of the group – the competition was on!

Tasks ranged from shepherds leading blind sheep to a human caterpillar and lava stepping stones, with the emphasis very much on pupils taking ownership of their learning, using critical thinking to develop ideas on how to solve the challenges. The girls and boys further developed their social skills as they learned to communicate with teammates on plans and solutions and they were encouraged to be reflective of their own individual performance and the group performance after each activity. Meanwhile, teachers supervised each group and rated their group on their listening, communication and task completion following each group review.

At the end of the day, all the groups came together for a final round of fun-filled, energetic games and activities. The pupils were exhausted by the end of the day, but all of them were very positive about their experiences. A number of them commented on how they made better friends with those they didn’t know as well and that they found it useful having to learn how to complete tasks when you aren’t working with your best friends. A great day all round!
