On Saturday 22 October the School saw Old Johnians RFC return to St John’s to take on opponents the Guildfordians.
With the sun shining on the hallowed green turf, a full squad of OJ leavers from 1997 to 2015 took to the pitch in front of a crowd of well over 100, hoping for victory.
What followed was 80 minutes of scintillating rugby with the backs scything through the opposition’s defence and the forwards bossing the set piece. The final score was 55-12 to the Old Johnians, which was roundly celebrated over a few beers and a match tea in the Dining Hall.
Chairman of the OJ RFC Laurence Down commented: “This game was an even bigger success than last year’s victory at St John’s against Haslemere. The fact that we were able to arrange such a magnificent day out speaks volumes for the successful Old Johnian network. It is always a delight to catch up with friends, older pupils and teachers. Absence makes the heart grow fonder they say, and everyone was feeling the romance of being back at St John’s.”
