Over the Christmas break the School’s 1st and 2nd XI attended a pre-season training camp held at CF Villareal to prepare for their 2017 league campaigns.
The boys were fortunate enough to train with the club's academy coaches, and attended sessions on pressing in defence and looking to be creative in attack.
As part of their trip, both St John’s teams took on two Spanish sides in highly competitive fixtures. The 1st XI beat well-regarded Spanish academy CD Castellon 3-1, with two great goals from Ben Tudor and a stunning strike from Owen White. They also delivered a comprehensive team performance against Athletico Moncadense with a 4-2 win.
The School’s Football Captain Henry Stevens (West House) said of the camp: “With the fantastic training sessions provided by the academy coaches, we felt that our technical ability has improved considerably. The camp was key in getting us ready for the upcoming season and our first game against Tonbridge School this Saturday.”
Joe Pepper, Head of Football at St John’s, commented “It was a great experience for our boys to train with a professional club with such terrific facilities and we now hope we can use this as a strong foundation to build from for the season.”
