Football

Football at St John’s is the major boys' sport played in the Spring Term. Our teams are known for playing attractive, passing football where pressing, creativity and teamwork are vital. The popularity of football means we put out 22 teams across all age groups and abilities with every pupil receiving coaching from our dedicated coaching staff. Whilst the primary focus is to improve the technique and tactical awareness of the players, there is considerable emphasis placed on the enjoyment and benefit gained from the camaraderie of the game.

The current fixture list sees us play the other top football schools in the area which include Harrow, St Paul’s and Tonbridge. The U15A, U16A, 3rd XI. 2nd XI and 1st XI teams play in the highly competitive Southern Independent Schools League, which the St John’s 1st XI have won twice in the last five years. This 1st XI also play in the ISFA Boodles Cup and the London Independent School's Cup which sees us compete against the best football schools nationally.

The standard of football is high with our players benefiting from impressive facilities including the use of Leatherhead Youth FC's state of the art 3G and our partnership with Ulimate Coaching who provide UEFA coaches and former professional footballers to coach and advise our players. We also run preseason training camps to assist with our preparations. We most recently trained at Villareal CF in Spain and in January 2018 will be training at Manchester City's Academy. Biannually, St John’s take an U16 side to the Gothia Cup in Sweden. This is an international tournament which hosts around 1200 teams from across the globe. Out of the 177 teams in the U16 age group, our teams have reached the last 32 on three separate occasions. Our performance at this highly prestigious tournament demonstrates the growing strength of football at St John's.

For those footballers who are keen to perform at the highest level we have good links with a number of academies and a number of our current boys are currently at Chelsea FC. Our footballers benefit from one to one mentoring and coaching and also individualised strength and conditioning programmes created by our Head of Strength and Conditioning.
