Introduction

Director of Sport: Miss L. E. Moors, LMoors@stjohns.surrey.sch.uk

St John’s has an excellent reputation for sport both in terms of the success of its sports teams but also the breadth of opportunity available. The boys’ sport has traditionally been strong with teams playing on a high calibre circuit and with the School now fully co-educational the girls’ sport is also flourishing. Whether in a team or individual environment, our pupils have the support to gain success in their chosen pursuits, both in and out of school. The School has first rate facilities which include: 9 rugby/football pitches, 2 astroturf pitches, 6 netball courts, 4 cricket squares, Sports Hall and Conditioning Room, 5 hard tennis courts and 24 synthetic courts (in the summer), athletics track, swimming pool and fives courts. All pupils take part in sport, of which there are at least 3 sessions per week, with most fixtures for the major sports taking place on a Saturday. All pupils are required to be available for fixtures at weekends.

Coaching

St John’s provides for its pupils at both the elite and recreational levels. Coaching is provided by a highly qualified staff who are assisted by an extensive range of professional coaches, across the sports and ability range. St John’s also puts out a large number of teams in the various sports to ensure that the majority of pupils get to represent the School.

Elite Provision

Those with the potential to progress beyond school standard receive a high quality and structured training programme, enabling them to develop the necessary skills in their chosen sport, alongside other key components such as diet and nutrition, conditioning programmes and boosting time management skills. This is enhanced through a sports scholars’ programme. A number of former pupils are now playing professional sport.

Sport For All

All pupils, regardless of ability, get fully involved in the sports programme. For those who do not participate in the major sport(s) for that term there is the ‘Alternative Games Programme’ which allows pupils to participate in a range of activities at a more recreational level. The Director of Sport determines which pupils can move from the ‘Major Games programme’ into the ‘Alternative Games Programme’.

Sixth Form (16+)

Sport at St John’s in the Sixth Form is very strong indeed. St John’s teams compete at the highest level in all major sports including rugby, netball, tennis, cricket, hockey, athletics and football. There are teams for all, whatever your ability, and you will be encouraged to take the opportunity to represent the School. Alternatively, you may choose to take advantage of the “Sport for All” programme, which offers a wide range of activities from swimming to zumba.
