A global and local perspective is an important element in developing the pupils at St John’s. High-quality trips and expeditions add great value to a pupil’s time at St John’s and have been part of life at the School for many years. All pupils have access to a rich variety of both residential and day trips as well as pupil exchanges, overseas expeditions and cultural immersion opportunities. Many are directly linked to the curriculum, but the benefits to pupils go far beyond the purely educational.
Physical and mental resources, initiative, leadership and teamwork are put to the ultimate test in a variety of expeditions and exhilarating tours across the globe - from wild game capture on the African plains to the geysers and volcanoes of Iceland. Our trips and expeditions teach lifelong social skills, from working as a team, to good time management and the real chance to stretch and test each individual. Our diverse trips and tours cultivate a great spirit of adventure and a love of personal challenge.
Many trips are fixed in each academic year, whilst others will be run on a different cycle, such as overseas sports trips. Some occur during the holidays, for example the Geography Department trip to Morocco and pre-season sports training.
St John’s School also offers a very exciting exchange program for students in the Upper Fifth who want to spend time in schools in South Africa or Australia. Pupils must apply for placements and be interviewed for them in this extremely popular programme, which plays an enormously important part in helping them to develop an international understanding and a powerful sense of their role as ambassadors for the School and the United Kingdom. They always return profoundly changed and matured by their experience.
