Junior House Swimming 2015

Swimmers at St John’s have continued to strengthen in recent years, with the junior house swimming trophy becoming a sought-after prize.

Montgomery House was a clear favourite in the boys’ competition, owing to the house’s possession of Matt Thomas, Bruce McCormick and Tom Stansfield – three regular team swimmers for the School. Montgomery led from the offset, closely followed by East, West and Surrey throughout the contest.

Haslewood made a splash in the girls’ competition, dominating the pool throughout. Jemima Lowe demonstrated an excellent 100m performance in the individual medley. Other fine swims came from Tom Shepherd (East House, Lower Fifth) in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.87s, Ben Simpson (West House, Fourth Form)  in the 50-yard breaststroke and Vyncent Lowery’s (East House, Lower Fifth) dominant display in the 50-yard backstroke.

As the relays began, Haslewood had all but secured victory, but it was down to South and Gloucester to battle it out for second place as South trailed by 4 points. South claimed a 1st and 2nd place in the freestyle and medley relay to finish on level points with Gloucester, securing the victory for Haslewood.

In the boys’ competition, Montgomery looked odds-on to claim the title, but with West on 20 points, East on 19 points and Surrey on 18 points, the swimmers still had every reason to give their best. Surrey scraped victory away from Montgomery by 0.13s in the freestyle relay and finished 2nd in the medley, leap-frogging East and West into second place.
