Lessons in volcanic activity

The Geography department took 16 Sixth Form pupils to Sicily and Sorrento to develop a practical understanding volcanic activity. Highlights included visiting the Vesuvius crater and excavated city of Pompeii. The pupils visited a working farm and learned how to make mozzarella from cow to plate. They had the opportunity to make pizzas, topped off with mozzarella of course!

The pupils took the cable car and snowmobiles to the top of Mount Etna in Sicily to witness lava flow and the intense heat pouring down the mountain side. They also took on the challenge of climbing Vulcano (one of the Aeolian Islands) from base to summit followed by a dip in the smelly thermal mud pools.
