Netball

Director of Netball: Mrs K Walsh-Jones, kwalsh-jones@stjohns.surrey.sch.uk

The netball club plays as the main girls’ sport during the Spring Term, however, a significant amount of netball takes place for A team squads in preparation for the National Schools’ tournament and county preliminary rounds in the Autumn Term. The club operates six senior teams, two U16 sides, ten junior teams and eight Lower School teams. The netball club regularly has 26 teams competing for the School in any one week, which is outstanding for a school of our size.

In the Lent Term each team trains three times a week and participates in fixtures against other schools in Surrey, Central London, Hertfordshire, Sussex, Kent and Berkshire. St John’s teams often qualify for the final stages of the county competition and in 2017-18 the U19A VII and U13A VII sides both reached county finals. Across the age groups, we have girls representing their county, club and also the Surrey Storm NPL sides. We currently have three Surrey Storm NPL players at the school, one Premier League level player, three girls playing at Regional Level and five girls are part of the Surrey County set-up. Over 30 girls regularly compete at Club Level outside school.

In the Autumn Term we run a number of trips; the U12 pupils travel to Shropshire on the JCA tour and the U19A and U16A compete in Loughborough and York. The senior tour takes place in November and is always exciting and enjoyable. The girls make the most of the opportunity to pit themselves against the Team Northumbria U19 NPL side and the 2018 U19 National Schools’ Champions, Queen Ethelburga’s College. In summer 2018 members of the club will be attending a Surrey Storm Superleague match and the Storm players will be also be coaching some of the Lower School netballers.

St John’s has a committed and highly talented group of coaches. Netball sessions are led specialists who coach at Superleague and Premier League level. All girls have the opportunity to represent the school in a competitive fixture at junior and senior level and we are proud of our ability to cater for both elite athletes and sport for all participants.
